One-year old boys in knitwear, flannels and boots – my heart is melting. Autumn is a gorgeous time to capture fall family pictures and outfit selection seems easy, but is it? Right around that one-year mark can be a challenge to dress. Are they walking or still crawling? Will they leave on a hat or just throw it off? If you pick them up, will their outfit bunch up to their neck? Well, the truth is that all these things are possible – think of it as the initiation to the toddler years. AND IT’S OKAY!!
If you view your family pictures as a way to capture a moment in time, it eases up the pressure. You’re freezing a moment in time. A moment where a photographer documents the love you have for your son. So if he throws his hat and stomps through the mud, it is okay. That was him, his personality. It may not have been what you imagined on your wall, but someday you’ll look back and the nostalgia of that moment will leave you in a puddle.
Now that I’m done prepping you for whatever comes your way, here are some fantastic fall family pictures outfit options for your son right around that 1-year milestone!!
Overalls
One thing I love about dressing boys in the fall are the layers!! Here I started with a set of green corduroy overalls. Place a cream, ribbed onsie underneath and layer a plaid shirt over top. These brown, sherpa booties from Target would be an adorable addition and possibly a Carhart beanie if the weather is chilly.
Another set of overalls with a neutral striped pattern. Again, I placed a ribbed onsie underneath and these cute brown, sherpa Target booties. A trapper hat would be super cute addition as well.
Denim
I REALLY love this gray washed denim shirt. Paired simply with a colored pant and brown boots would be a really great and classic family picture outfit. I imagine the sleeves rolled up just a bit to mid forearm. (This specific outfit would be best worn by a walking 1-year old.)
Another great way to add denim is layered over top of a plaid shirt. It’s no secret that I LOVE this denim jacket (see post over here). If you are going to layer as such, make sure to test out your layering PRIOR to pictures! You want to make sure that the base layer is not too big and the top layer is not too small. Make sure your little guy is comfy (comfort > style).
Overalls + Denim
A pair of denim overalls – it’s perfect. You could definitely style as the original set with some little boots OR if you want to get more creative, you can place this really beautiful Jamie Kay sweater underneath the overalls for a cozy combo.
Enjoy these fall-inspired looks for your 1-year old boy and don’t let anyone convince you that dressing a boy isn’t fun 😉
