Congratulations!! You’ve just had (or are preparing for) a new addition to your family. While the newborn phase can be challenging and largely unpredictable, it is sprinkled with the most precious and whimsical moments. Don’t let those moments get away from you. One of the best ways to captures these memories for a lifetime is through newborn photos.

To date, I have styled five of my own lifestyle newborn sessions – each being quite unique from the others. Looking back, that first newborn session was so sweet and peaceful (void of older siblings being bribed with treats). Things certainly have changed. My most recent session was chaos-filled yet the joy I feel when I revisit that gallery is unmatched.

Have I convinced you to schedule your newborn photo session yet?!

Okay, good 😉 Now let’s talk outfits. If there’s anything I have learned while styling outfits for people, it is that everyone does it differently! And that’s okay! For example, I have a friend who waits until after baby has arrived before going shopping for her outfit (honestly, I think she is a superhero because no one is catching me out shopping postpartum – we still laugh about this). Other mamas have their outfit picked out for months in advance prior to styling the rest of their family and still others like to prep their kids/newborn first and pick their outfit second. So whether I just described your shopping style or you have another pattern you follow, there are still plenty of helpful tips in my newborn photo outfit guide.

Mom

You have worked so hard the past 9 (ish) months, not to mention labor and delivery – don’t put your self last on picture day! Have an extra outfit selected in case you don’t feel like wearing your initial choice. Postpartum is unforgiving in a lot of ways; it took me five babies to finally brave a dress. All four prior sessions, I switched last minute to jeans + blouse combo because that was how I felt most comfortable. Whether you’re opting for a dress or a top + pants combination, keep your colors light and/or neutral and make sure you are COMFORTABLE.

Dad

I cannot tell you how many times my husband’s outfit got picked last and I would not recommend it. Select a nice button down, classic pullover or, my personal preference, a simple t-shirt. Again, I would avoid bold colors. Picking a neutral or chambray is timeless. Tip: avoid sports polos and logos at all costs. As much as a I love a good sports brand, I do NOT want their logo plastered on my hallway photo gallery for the next year.

Newborn

Here’s where you can get a little more adventurous! Let your most prized position stand out. For little ladies, ivory, cream, white and blush tones are lovely on those dainty features. You can also add textures here in a baby wrap, baby blanket, lace onesie or even in sweet details such as a flower or pearl-lined headband. For your little man, textured wraps or blankets are also a definite “yes” or you can go a little more bold with a rich-toned knit piece as you can see below.

Siblings

Another place to add some character is with those big sibs. Whether it’s tulle, stripes, floral patterns or ruffles, find pieces that allow their personalities to shine while also complimenting your newborn. Be careful! If their outfits are too bold or too busy, it will distract attention from baby sis/bro. Here are some great ideas if you’re looking for inspiration.
