Creating unique and affordable outfit ideas for each sweet season in your child's life

What to (actually) buy for your new baby girl

I can still remember the moment I found out that my first baby was a girl…my heart was swooning just thinking about little bows and pink dresses. Five babies later (two being girls), I smile thinking about those early shopping trips and how differently I shop now. Don’t get me wrong, I still love shopping for my girls; however, the baby phase could have been greatly consolidated. When I found out I was expecting my second girl, I did much better at selecting outfits with more jurisdiction. Here is my list of favorites for those first few months:

(If you’re looking for newborn picture ideas, see this post here!)

Pajamas/Sleep gowns

The absolute most practical thing to buy for those first few months are footed pajamas and sleep gowns. They are so cozy and comfortable and much easier for diaper changes (especially ones with zippers). I recommend buying the cutest footed pajamas you can find and just let her live in them 💕 Carters and Cloud Island are my go-tos for this. Carters typically runs a bit smaller than the Cloud Island which is not a problem – just something to be aware of. This beautiful ruffled botanical print from MilkSnob is a little on the pricier side BUT I have a 10% off discount code to use at checkout here (EMILYW10)!!

If you’re looking for a bit of a splurge, look no further than Spearmint and Caden Lane. The quality at both of these shops is fantastic, but they are more pricey. I’m a sucker for the solid prints with ruffles…

Sleep Swaddles/Wraps

I’d love to advise you on sleep swaddles but I may save this post for another day. Just know that you’ll want them!!

To date, I’ve had five babies and I’m pretty sure we have done different swaddles and sleep sacks for each one – not helpful! Except maybe it’s a good lesson in being open and flexible – your little one is uniquely themself and that’s okay.

Bows (of course!!)

BOWS…YAY!! Okay there are TONS of baby bows out there. But if you made me select ONE set of baby bows for my newborn girl, this classic set from Little Poppy Co would be it. The material is soft on that flawless baby skin and the prints are so versatile. These do stay on better than a majority of the other bows that we have had, partially because the bow itself is so dainty. I rebought this set when I had my second baby girl and I buy them frequently as baby gifts!! It is my all-time favorite.

Swimsuit

Okay, I think determining when you need a swimsuit is highly variable. It depends on you, your family, where you live, and the season baby was born in. I don’t typically have my babies in the pool regularly until around the 6 month mark. BUT if your family are pool rats, you may want to invest in water proof baby carriers and baby swimsuits. Nonetheless, when you do decide to buy a swimsuit for your girl, I have two recommendations.

  1. Stick to a one piece. As tempting as the teeny bikinis are, they don’t stay in place. And as a busy momma, you don’t need one more thing to mess with.
  2. Make sure they have snaps at the bottom! I honestly didn’t know that they made baby suits WITHOUT snaps…until I bought one without realizing it. No one likes a poopy pool diaper change – but I’m telling you that it is way worse when your stripping off the whole suit. No thanks.

Outfits

Imagine baby girl is getting a little bigger (think 4-6 months). That personality is starting to really shine. Baby girl is rolling and entering the stage of eating and sitting. YAY!! SO FUN!!! This is when I actually started using more outfits. Well, not all outfits. Truth is, this age is where they LIVED in rompers and jumpsuits. Like seriously, every day. (Don’t get me wrong, these are still precious on your newborn and if you were to go back and look at my girls’ baby clothes, there’s sure to be rompers and bubbles in every size.) They are cute for play dates, church, weddings, or just lounging at home. As must as I love dresses and two-piece sets, they are constantly riding up and getting bunched. Dresses also get caught frequently once baby girl is on the move – basically a fall risk. But when it comes to rompers and bubbles, we have an infinite amount of these and they were worn on repeat. While my favorites are no longer in stock, I selected similar ones that I would be LOVING if I had a baby girl right now.

Shoes

Soft Soled Moccasins

Soft soled moccasins. 100%. These protect your little one’s feet but allow for good grip and balance once they start standing. I love Freshly Picked’s moccasins. They may be a little pricier, but IMO I’d rather spend more money on a single, great quality pair of shoes that gets worn daily than three cheap pairs that fall off or are impractical. Here are a few of my favorites right now for a baby girl:

Note that there is another company called Bird Rock Baby that had very similar baby moccasins for about half the price of Freshly Picked. I don’t have any experience in my kids wearing them, but you’re welcome to check them out here! If you try them out, let me know what you think!

Zutanos

The only other baby shoe that I would recommend is a set of Zutanos!! You can find them at their site or on Amazon. If you have a little one during cooler months, these are amazing. They are super cozy with little grippers on the bottoms and wrap around the ankle to help stay on. Personally, I did not find them the most practical for newborns; I used mostly from 6-12 months. I’m really loving this fuzzy set 😍

Others

That sums up my most used baby girl clothing items! Below, I added a few extra things that we loved. Congratulations on your newest little love! Are there any other must-haves on your list?!
